The Moroccan international and Paris Saint-Germain footballer Achraf Hakimi has been referred to trial on charges of raping a young woman in February 2023, the player's lawyer and the Nanterre public prosecutor told AFP on Tuesday. The player responded on the social media platform X, saying, "Today, it is enough to be charged with rape to be sent to trial, even if you contest it and everything that exists proves that it is false." The 27-year-old Moroccan international added, "I await this trial calmly, which will allow the truth to come to light." In late February 2023, the then 24-year-old woman, who is the same age as the player, first went to a police station in Val-de-Marne, where she reported being raped but did not file a formal complaint. The player's lawyer, Fani Collin, stated, "A trial is imposed based on an accusation based solely on the word of one woman, which has blocked all investigations. She refused all medical examinations and DNA tests, refused to extract data from her mobile phone, and refused to name a key witness." Collin considered that the "psychological evaluations" of the plaintiff "revealed a lack of clarity regarding the events she claims to have reported," particularly noting that she "tried to hide from the court several messages she exchanged with a friend, in which they were planning to 'rob' Mr. Hakimi." On the other hand, after the prosecution's pleas, which had initially requested the football player be sent to trial for rape, Bardou stated, "Nothing in this file allows for the characterization of an attempted extortion." She added, "We will not accept any smear campaign or destabilization, which unfortunately happens all too often to women who have the courage to report the rapes they have suffered."
