Louvre to Boost Security After Crown Theft

The director of the Louvre, Laurence des Cars, announced on Wednesday that new surveillance cameras and anti-intrusion systems will soon be installed in the Parisian landmark following a theft that caused shockwaves due to the theft of the crown jewels last month. Des Cars stated that the operation of the approximately 100 cameras will begin by the end of next year, while the security systems will be installed within two weeks. She described the systems as equipment that will prevent intruders from approaching the museum buildings, though she did not provide details. She noted that the new surveillance cameras will aim to ensure 'comprehensive protection of the area surrounding the museum.' Des Cars told the Cultural Affairs Committee of the National Assembly: 'After the shock, the impact, and the assessment, it is time to take action' in the museum, which receives the highest number of visitors in the world. She also mentioned that this is all part of more than 20 emergency measures that will be implemented. She added that the new measures include creating the position of 'security coordinator' at the museum, a job that was announced this month.
