Paris Louvre Museum remains closed due to workers' strike

Paris, Dec 17 (EFE).- The Louvre Museum in Paris, the world's most visited with nearly 9 million visitors a year, remained closed to the public on Wednesday after its workers extended a strike that began on Monday, the unions announced. The museum was also closed on Tuesday, but not specifically due to the strike, but because it was the institution's weekly day off. The unions have asked Culture Minister Rachida Dati to reverse budget cuts and demand that the money be dedicated to the maintenance of the museum and not to the planned renovation of the vast building, which in their opinion will not improve the general conditions of the establishment. According to worker representatives, Dati, who met with the unions a few days ago, has not made sufficient concessions. The unions have in their sights the current director, Laurence des Cars, whom they accuse of prioritizing grand events instead of addressing the necessary rehabilitation of the museum. Des Cars herself is facing a new parliamentary commission on Wednesday afternoon at the French National Assembly's Committee on Cultural Affairs.
