Macron: Europe Must Enhance Defense Against Russia Threat

President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the need for Europe to bolster its defense in response to rising Russian threats. He announced a strategic debate on nuclear deterrence for European allies and highlighted Russia's aggression, urging continued support for Ukraine's resistance efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged Europe to strengthen its defense against the growing threat posed by Russia and doubts about the United States' commitment to the continent's security. In his televised intervention, Macron indicated that a strategic debate has opened to extend France's nuclear deterrence to its European allies, although he emphasized that the final decision on the use of atomic weapons will remain in French hands.

"Russia is a threat to France and Europe," Macron stated, citing various aggressions by Moscow in recent years, such as the assassinations of opponents, interference in elections, cyberattacks, and military provocations near European borders. Macron recalled Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and again in 2022, turning the conflict into a "global" issue.

The French president highlighted the importance of supporting Ukraine and maintaining pressure on Russia for negotiating a solid peace. He announced an upcoming meeting in Paris of the chiefs of staff of countries willing to guarantee a peace agreement in Ukraine, aimed at establishing a firm and lasting plan together with Kyiv and European partners.

Macron warned about Russia's rearmament program, significantly increasing its military capacity by 2030, which raises doubts about the U.S. commitment to European security. In this regard, he emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its defense and security capabilities to ensure its independence in these matters.

Domestically, Macron announced an increase in military spending without raising taxes and called for unity and commitment from the French in this pivotal moment. Finally, the French president held a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to discuss Ukraine and European defense, highlighting the importance of collectively addressing the current challenges on the continent.
