French police arrested two people after a brief fight between supporters during the Nations League match between France and Israel, confirmed Paris police chief Laurent Nunez on Friday. It was unclear what caused the altercation, but security intervened after approximately one minute.
The match ended in a 0-0 draw with no further incidents inside the stadium. Dutch authorities said supporters from both sides were involved in those disturbances. Police deployed thousands of officers and increased security following the violence in Amsterdam before and after a Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
"It was a quick intervention by the officers. We were extremely reactive, so the incident was contained quickly," Nunez said in an interview with France 2. Officers indicated that they immediately placed one person in custody and arrested the other after the match, with the help of video evidence.
The brawl broke out almost 10 minutes after the match started as scheduled at 8:45 p.m. Paris time in the upper section of the stands behind one of the goals. Some of those involved had Israeli flags on their backs.
The assaults on Maccabi supporters caused outrage and were widely condemned as anti-Semitic.
