Macron and Sheinbaum Discuss Cooperation and Fight Against Drug Trafficking

French President Emmanuel Macron said at a press conference alongside his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum: "France respects the sovereignty of every State, and the fight against drug traffickers is a cause that unites us all." This was in response to a question about U.S. attacks on boats allegedly used for drug trafficking in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean. The governments signed cooperation agreements in scientific, cultural, environmental, and diplomatic fields, which include academic mobility programs for Mexican and French students, as well as collaboration on women's rights and renewable energy. Sheinbaum and Macron met at the Palace to review the trade treaty with the EU. Sheinbaum announced that the trade treaty between Mexico and the European Union will be renewed in 2026, coinciding with the bicentennial of Mexico-France diplomatic relations, which will open new opportunities for investment and trade. Furthermore, the Franco-Mexican Strategic Council for Economic Development will be strengthened. This dialogue body was created to strengthen economic, scientific, and cultural ties between the two countries, focusing on areas such as digital technology, agricultural innovation, energy transition, and cultural and historical exchange. In the cultural sphere, Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico will accept the temporary transfer of the Azcatitlan Codex from the National Library of France, while the Boturini Codex will be exhibited in Paris. Sheinbaum emphasized that these documents are "the written voice of our ancestors and the deep root of our identity".
