This is not the first time Sarkozy has been convicted in corruption cases, but in previous instances, he was given a suspended sentence. With this ruling, the 70-year-old Sarkozy has become the first former head of state in modern French history to be sentenced to actual prison time. On Monday, a French court was reviewing a decision on whether to release Sarkozy, just 20 days after his imprisonment, according to the Associated Press. Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in a plot to finance his 2007 election campaign.
