The French Public Prosecutor has requested the release of former President Nicolas Sarkozy under judicial supervision after his conviction on corruption charges, which he denies. This is not the first time Sarkozy has been convicted in corruption cases, but in previous instances, he was given a suspended sentence. With this ruling, the 70-year-old Sarkozy has become the first former head of state in modern French history to be sentenced to actual prison time. On Monday, a French court was reviewing a decision on whether to release Sarkozy, just 20 days after his imprisonment, according to the Associated Press. Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy in a plot to finance his 2007 election campaign.
