UEFA punishes Marseille for Champions League riots

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) announced on Saturday the punishment of the French club Marseille following riots that occurred during its match against the Italian Atalanta (0-1) in the fourth round of the Champions League on the 5th of this month. The continental union clarified in a statement on its official website from its disciplinary committee that Marseille was punished with the partial closure of the south stand of the Velodrome stadium during its next match in the competition against the English Newcastle United on November 25. UEFA also imposed several financial fines on Marseille totaling more than 71,000 euros for the use of fireworks, throwing objects, and the use of lasers. UEFA also added that the goalkeeping coach Alexander Salvo has been suspended for two matches 'for insulting a referee or using offensive language towards him' during the defeat to Atalanta, which came at the end of the match following a controversial incident.
