The Paris prosecutor's office said on Tuesday that French police raided the offices of X, the platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk, who was summoned by prosecutors for questioning in April as part of a broad investigation into the platform. The raid and Musk's summons are linked to an ongoing investigation since last year into suspected misuse of algorithms and the deceptive extraction of user data by the platform or its executives. This could increase tension between Europe and the United States over major tech companies and freedom of speech. The prosecutor's office said in a statement that it is expanding the investigation following complaints about the platform's AI-powered chatbot, Grok. Musk and the platform's former CEO, Linda Yaccarino, were summoned to a hearing on April 20. Other platform employees were also called as witnesses. The platform has not yet commented. Musk denied the initial allegations in July, saying French prosecutors were opening a 'politically motivated criminal investigation.' Prosecutors said, 'This investigation at this stage is part of a constructive approach aimed at ensuring X's compliance with French law.' Such summonses are mandatory, although difficult to enforce on those living outside France. Following the April hearing, authorities can decide to either suspend or continue the investigation, and potentially detain the suspects.
