PSG suffers surprise defeat to Rennes

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat to their hosts Rennes in the 22nd round of the French football league. PSG's point total was frozen at 51, keeping them in first place, but only two points ahead of second-place Lille, who will play host to PSG on Saturday in the same round. Thus, the leadership of the current French, European, and world vice-champion is under threat. A win for Lille over PSG would give them the top spot, one point ahead of the team managed by Spanish coach Luis Enrique. On the other hand, Rennes increased their total to 34 points, moving into fifth place, five points behind fourth-place Marseille, who will face Strasbourg in the same round. Rennes took the lead in the 34th minute through Jordanian star Musa Al-Tamari, followed by a second goal from his teammate Stéphane Lepole in the 69th minute. PSG responded with a goal from Ousmane Dembélé in the 71st minute, but Rennes managed to score a third goal in the 81st minute through Bertrand Traoré. Rennes controlled the first half, denying PSG any threat to their goal. The team sealed off their penalty area tightly and launched many counter-attacks. Rennes was rewarded for its performance when Musa Al-Tamari scored the first goal, receiving the ball and moving with it deep into PSG's defense before striking a powerful shot that shook the capital team's net in the 34th minute. After taking the lead in the first half, Rennes grew more confident in the second, creating many dangerous chances against goalkeeper Matvey Safonov, who tried to ward off the threats. In the 69th minute, Stéphane Lepole scored Rennes' second goal after receiving a pass from his teammate Sébastien Chiemami and putting the ball into the net.
