The Federation of Exporters of Wines and Spirits of France (FEVS) expressed its concern over Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs of 200 percent on French products, considering this measure to be the result of a misguided strategy by the European Commission in the trade war. The FEVS urged the European Commission to rethink its approach and take action in another sector to avoid the imposition of these tariffs.
In a statement, the president of the federation, Gabriel Picard, highlighted the need for a firm yet intelligent response from EU member states. He criticized the European Commission's decision to impose tariffs on U.S. products like California wines or Kentucky bourbon in response to Trump's measures in the steel and aluminum sectors.
French exporters fear the consequences that Trump's proposed tariffs could have, as they could significantly affect French wine and spirit exports to the United States, their main foreign market accounting for 25 percent of the sector's overseas sales.
French Economy Minister Éric Lombard described the situation as a "stupid war" that will harm both sides. He acknowledged the necessity to respond to the proposed escalations of tariffs by the United States but also emphasized the importance of negotiating to reduce tensions and reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
Lombard announced his intention to travel to the United States in the coming days to engage in dialogue with U.S. authorities and seek a solution. He expressed the need to reach an agreement, as both the United States and the EU will suffer the consequences of a prolonged trade war, which could impact the global economy.
