Frenchman Discovers €700,000 Gold Treasure in His Garden

A French man stumbled upon a treasure buried in his garden, finding gold worth 700,000 euros while digging a hole for a pool. According to LADBible, the man had bought the house a year ago and decided to renovate and refurbish it, including building a pool in the garden. As stipulated by the 19th-century Civil Code, «ownership of a treasure reverts to the person who discovered it on his land, unless another person can prove a better right to it». Since the former owner had died and no one came forward to claim the gold, the man received official permission to keep the gold he found after six months of investigation. During the excavation, workers found several plastic bags containing five gold bars and a large number of coins, all carefully packed as if hidden intentionally. According to local media, the bags were buried at a depth of several tens of centimeters under the surface. The man immediately reported the find to the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs, which is responsible for examining treasures to determine their archaeological value, historical significance, and potential criminal origins. It was later determined that the items were not archaeological artifacts, were 15–20 years old, and no criminal traces were found. French law requires the reporting of any discoveries that may be related to antiquities.
