France reduces budget deficit exceeding expectations

Official data released yesterday showed that France reduced its public sector budget deficit for 2025, exceeding expectations, as economic growth outperformed forecasts. According to France's National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies, the public accounts for last year showed a deficit of 5.1% of GDP, down from 5.8% in 2024 and better than the government's latest estimate of 5.4%. The government aims to reduce the deficit this year to 5% as part of plans to bring the deficit down to a maximum of 3%, set by the European Union, by 2029, at a time when France's public debt reached 115.6% of GDP in 2025.
