According to AFP, 403 attempted murders of spouses were recorded in 2024. In total, 16% of these cases occurred in the context of an uncontested separation. The ministry noted that the perpetrator is 'still most often a man (...) holds French nationality and is unemployed at the time.' The association 'Femicides by current or former partners' (FPCE) stated that it is time to put an end to 'impunity.' Anne-Cécile Maillefert, head of the Femmes foundation, described the situation as 'extremely tragic,' and believes that combating this violence 'is no longer a national priority' for the authorities. She added, 'This increase does not surprise us, given the cuts or delays in funding that directly impact associations, forcing them to close or reduce their services.' They are 'no longer able' to protect female victims. The number of women killed in France increased by 11% between 2023 and 2024, with 107 women killed by their current or former partners, a situation described by human rights associations as 'tragic.' According to an annual national study by the Ministry of the Interior, French security forces recorded a total of 138 deaths from domestic violence last year, including 31 men (a 35% year-on-year increase). The study, 'On violent deaths between spouses,' published on the ministry's website, confirmed that 'on average, one death is recorded every three days.'
